Did you ever hear the one about the group of people recruited to do a study on drunk driving? A group of, let’s say, 20 people were taken to a facility where test driving was done. They were all given alcoholic beverages before driving on the course. Some of the course included driving in and out of bright orange cones, driving in straight lanes and other such complicated situations. It was a funny albeit scientific spectacle.
Except there was one catch.
Only 10 of the drivers were actually drunk.
Because only 10 of the drivers were actually given alcohol.
The other 10 were given a placebo. (An inactive substance or preparation used as a control in an experiment or test to determine the effectiveness of a medicinal drug. )
Yet all 20 people were driving as sloshed individuals. What does this mean?
Well, to me, it means that that morning coffee you depend on to rip open your eyes and mumble coherent sentences for the rest of the day?….. you probably don’t need it as much as you think you do. Oh, and the kids that leap buildings in a single bound and destroy continents after drinking a can of pop?…… probably have heard since they were babies how sugar makes kids crazy.
Sure these things, alcohol-coffee-sugar, all have been proven to affect our bodies. I’m just saying that maybe we let how we THINK these things are going to affect us, increase the actual effect.
Ever seen this in action?
